Strategien im ländlichen Raum VI

Hidden Museum - an art project by Bernhard Kathan

Ausstellung|Strategien im ländlichen Raum | 28. 05. 2011 - 19. 06. 2011

opening hours: Sa, So 14-18 Uhr sowie nach tel. Vereinbarung.

opening: 28. 05. 2011 18 Uhr

"Whenever I speak of the HIDDEN MUSEUM, I have in mind not so much the tangible building structure, but rather the ideas and perceptions associated with it. ... I invite artists and so on. ... Of course these projects are not my own, even if I occasionally develop the qualities of a midwife. Usually there are no problems. At most, there are false expectations at the outset. It has to be clear from the start that I am neither a gallerist nor a sponsor, that I neither buy art nor collect it. What is central is exchange, and I participate mainly through my work. ... Even if what remains of the individual pieces presented here is at most some artefacts, each of these works of art has a lasting effect on the project as a whole. Each work that arises here or is presented here is always an intervention into the building structure as well. The structure is constantly changing, in spite of the fact that art is neither collected nor deposited here."

Bernhard Kathan, born in 1953 in Fraxern, Vorarlberg, lives and works as a cultural historian, writer and artist in Innsbruck. He is the author of numerous presentations and audio plays, articles, commentaries and essays. He is also the operator of HIDDEN MUSEUM, which was designated by Günter Gstrein as "the most dubious museum project of present times". Bernhard Kathan has focussed for a long time on projects in rural areas. What are the requirements? What works and what does not? He will illustrate these and other questions by working through the example of a cattle show.
