The exhibition Empty Spaces revolves around phenomena of suppressing and forgetting, of presence in absence and the state of emptiness as the place (of origin) of narratives.
A collection of photo and mixed media pieces whose central motif are empty spaces is clustered around two video installations. Striking about both video projects is that they record, with fixed camera position, a spatial situation where nothing seems to happen. They might almost be mistaken for photographs, were it not for the level of sound which carries the central meaning and where the actual narrative(s) take(s) place.
The pieces of the exhibition are about what is hidden and suppressed, what gains a stronger presence through its absence than if it were actually shown: be it in history – the expropriation and expulsion of the Jewish population by the Nazis (Kaufhaus Dichter(Department Store Poet) by Eva Brunner-Szabo), in contemporary history – the ongoing discriminatory treatment of black domestic workers in South Africa (The Lenox by Machfeld), in front of a social background – the secret occupation of abandoned industrial plants by homeless people or illegal immigrants (Hotel Clandestine by Alessandro Mencarelli, Matters of Fact by Sharp) or the inescapably personal – death (The Landscapes Behind by Angela Svoronou).
