Workshop mit Ines Lechleitner

Storytelling between Species

Workshop|Weinviertler Fotowochen | 29. 07. 2017 - 05. 08. 2017

opening: 29.7.2017 10 Uhr Kursgebühr: 260.-EURO

In encounters with animals our perception is often tainted by preconceived ideas and clichés. The quality of the encounter will depend on our knowledge about a species or the stories we have seen or heard about it over the years. On the other hand, when we spend an extended period of time with an animal keeping our gaze open and analytical, not unlike an ethologist, these preconceptions may easily give way to a new understanding or awe as to what we observe.

In this workshop we are looking for a different kind of animal-human-encounter and its mediation through the resulting photographs and artist books.

As opposed to the fast flow of animal images on the net, we will work here in a slow pace with analogue equipment and mostly in black and white. This procedure leads to a more precise choice of the image taking moment and creates another rhythm. The analogue process facilitates the focus on the very moment of the encounter and separates the moment of taking the image from its analysis.

After one day of photographing in Schönbrunn Zoo, we will develop and analyse the resulting pictures. Following the their nature we will decide if to enlarge a small selection of images in the analogue laboratory or rather to create an artist book or leaflet in the digital lab. Both the analogue prints and the publications will be produced with the assistance of Ines Lechleitner in the castle and presented in an exhibition in the end.

The workshop is open to everyone interested. 35mm- and middle format cameras will be made available but your own analogue camera and laptop would be very welcome. The fees for the Zoo, the development of the film and the final printing papers have to be covered by the participants.
