One of the main features of photography has always been its documentary character, as a function of memory. I take pictures to remember. Events that seem worth entering into individual or collective memory are released from the flow of time by the apparatus and thus preserved. It is not without reason that “Pictures against Forgetting” often appear as a title of exhibitions; not only in so-called “years of remembrance” such as this year, in which anniversaries of historical (major) events shape the public discourse. Of course, this function of photography has long been theoretically questioned and relativized. Through the use and the contextualization of photography in its respective media environment, the phenomenon now seems to be reversed. I take pictures to forget. Has it not always been the case that the interposition of a lens objectifies our direct experience of the so-called reality, and thus eludes it into its distanced shade?
Nina Fischer and Maroan el Sani have been artistically moving in this field of tension for a long time. The fact that their projects focus not on what is final and completed, but on the process, the search, the cautious approach to that which no longerexists, but also does not exist yet, is based on the reflection of the possibilities of photography as well as on a traditional Japanese worldview – a country where the two artists have lived and worked for a long time.
