One of the main features of photography has always been its documentary character, as a function of memory. I take pictures to remember. Events that seem worth entering into individual or collective memory are released from the flow of time by the apparatus and thus preserved. Of course, this function of photography has long been theoretically questioned and relativized. Through the use and the contextualization of photography in its respective media environment, the phenomenon now seems to be reversed. I take pictures to forget.
Nina Fischer and Maroan el Sani have been artistically moving in this field of tension for a long time. The fact that their projects focus not on what is final and completed, but on the process, the search, the cautious approach to that which no longerexists, but also does not exist yet, is based on the reflection of the possibilities of photography as well as on a traditional Japanese worldview – a country where the two artists have lived and worked for a long time.
